The Lindy Scholars Program aims to "level the playing field" and increase student retention, academic achievement, and access to post-secondary education. We want to inspire children to see a personal future in a technologically driven global economy and provide them with the enrichment and support that will ultimately enable them to be admitted to and succeed in college.
The Lindy Scholars Program will provide free mathematics, writing, and literacy tutoring and related mentoring to selected students in grades 6-8 enrolled in 3 elementary schools within the West Philadlephia region. Drexel staff, faculty, and student volunteers will work closely with school administrators, students, and parents to help identify needs and then provide services on campus and within the community to improve student performance and increase student interest.
The program will consist of three parts:
- a tutoring and mentoring component
- teacher professional development
- parent/guardian information sessions

TUTORING/MENTORING
Each student enrolled as a "Lindy Scholar" will be paired with a Drexel college student, or "Lindy Advisor", who will serve as both a tutor and a mentor. Twice a week after school, trained Drexel tutors will meet with the Lindy Scholars at their elementary school to assist with homework and enhance student learning in math, writing and literacy. On select weekends, Lindy Schollars and Advisors will meet on Drexel's campus for fun social activities. On occasion, they will go on trips to different events in the city, including exhibitions at museums and other cultural activities.
PARENT/GUARDIAN INFORMATION SESSIONS
Parents of the Lindy Scholars will be invited to participate in informational sessions. These workshops will provide parents with information on high school selection, college access, strategies to increase learning at home, and other relevant topics for caregivers of middle school students. Workshops will include refreshments and take place at convenient times and locations. Parents will be compensated for their time and involvement.

TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
All teachers within each school will be invited to participate in professional development activities directly related to the academic supports provided to the Lindy Scholards. Participating teachers will be compensated for their time and involvement. As a result of the professional development activities, all students in the school will potentially benefit from the program, not just those enrolled in the program.
